Bridging Tradition With Innovation: A Sneak Peek at Operation Diversify
Doing great work, that matters – to real people like you – is a philosophy Erica developed by way of her MFA graduate thesis research at Texas State University
My thesis research over the past several years has most recently culminated in a solution that is deeply personal, critically urgent, and designed to tackle a wicked problem head-on — the impending loss of generational farming and ranching lands, currently set to upend our local food systems within the next 3 to 5 years.
I’m calling the solution I’ve developed: Operation Diversify.
A Brief Reality Check
As a 6th generation Texas rancher, I’ve seen firsthand the unprecedented challenges that small, independent producers face today. The latest facts truly blew my mind.
90% of all agricultural producers are considered “small” – meaning they bring in $50k or less per year. But did you know that the actual average on-farm income is a mere $31,000 a year? The families who produce our food, fiber, and fuel can’t survive on agriculture alone. 14% of rural Texans are currently food insecure, and 17% are impoverished.
Compounding the situation is the fact that over half of all producers in Texas are 60 or older. They’ve struggled to make ends meet with ever-diminishing returns – told their kids to go to college, to find jobs in the city.
Let me translate what this means for you and I: Our food producers are aging out of the industry within the next 10 years, and there’s no one lined-up to take over. Generational lands will be lost at an unprecedented rate within the next 10 years.
In 2025 alone, the U.S. lost 15,000 farms and ranches – with the most staggering losses of generational lands happening right here, in Texas.
Why This Matters — To You
This is not just a matter of land changing hands – it’s a loss of institutional knowledge about how to care for and steward land, hyper-localized to specific areas and regions – developed over generations upon generations.
This is not simply about developing more affordable housing – unsustainable urban sprawl is draining our water tables and irreversibly altering our ecosystems.
We are already seeing the impacts in the Texas Hill Country.
While these changes will eventually impact everything from the clothes we wear to the air we breathe – the most immediate impact will be what you see (rather, don’t see) on the grocery shelves.
If we don't change course, "Big Ag" and "Big Food" are set to completely upend our local food systems — and this change is happening a lot sooner than you might think — starting now, actually. Within the next 3 to 5 years, farm fresh proteins and produce will become both scarce and unaffordable.
What exactly is Operation Diversify?
Agriculture extension agents consistently urge independent producers to "diversify" to survive – which is practical advice for any business. However, once I began digging into the research, I quickly realized that the current landscape of resources only advise producers why they need to change, but leave the how entirely up to the imagination.
My thesis work aims to close that gap. Operation Diversify started as my way of bridging my family's 150-year ranching heritage with my 25+ years of experience in business strategy and innovation.
I am developing a tactical, step-by-step roadmap that helps folks launch new consumer-facing (B2C) income streams. Operation Diversify is a DIY "business blueprinting" system and Income Diversification (ID) toolkit. The prototype is currently purpose-built for independent farmers and ranchers – an aging, blue-collar, digital tech-averse agricultural audience – as a test-case to prove-out the adaptability and efficacy of the framework.
The goal? Democratize the elite human-centered design and business strategy methods I use every day as a consultant, by adapting them to support the needs of any solopreneur, startup, or growing business.
By demonstrating how Operation Diversify can help small producers transition from being passive price-takers in the volatile commodities market to becoming price-setting, value-added brands – I’ll take the proven concept and adapt it to a broader audience.
A Sneak Peek at What’s Being Built
I am excited to share that I’m targeting a January 2027 release for the complete Operation Diversify program.
Here is a sneak peek at the tools and support systems coming your way:
The 8-Phase Framework: The core of the system is an 8-phase process divided into two parts: Strategy (Blueprinting) and Execution (Building). It helps producers discover lucrative new opportunities by utilizing the assets, equipment, and "superpowers" they already have on the ground, minimizing financial risk.
Print and Digital Editions: The toolkit will be available as a comprehensive Print Edition featuring a physical workbook, fold-out process map, and QR codes. It will be paired with a free, mobile-first Digital Edition hub that acts as a companion learning experience, offering interactive Canva worksheets, video tutorials, and webinars.
Meet "Trixie" the AI Assistant: To help bridge the digital divide, I've developed "Trixie," a custom Google Gemini AI assistant. Trixie acts as a digital facilitator to help brainstorm ideas, conduct market research, and translate complex business strategy into plain language—no typing required.
Income Diversification (ID) Academy: Because some ventures require a more surgical approach, we are launching the ID Academy. This includes hands-on Accelerator Programs (available in 8-week and 16-week tracks) featuring weekly group check-ins and 1x1 consulting, plus Flexible Coaching Subscriptions suited to DIYers who just need an expert in their back pocket, which includes weekly open office hours and on-demand support from an expert.
From the bottom of my heart, I want this work to be used in a way that ensures our lands, and the hardworking families who steward them, do more than just survive — I want to see our local food systems thrive for the next 150 years.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the January 2027 launch!
