The SFO Airport “Flight Deck” Experience

A sculptural installation & interactive experience to celebrate the airport’s newest terminal opening.

Creating this best-in-class experience for traveler’s was an exercise in blending physical and digital spaces. Our team conceived, designed and produced a beautiful, smart, useful installation and sculptural data visualization that won recognition and accolades within the industry. The UX approach was based on three principles:

  1. Quick Meaningful Interactions

  2. Playful Collaboration

  3. Personal, Portable Experiences

We built three corresponding modes of engagement:

ATTRACT

A sculptural data visualization reflected all real-time inbound and outbound flights to SFO. The visual was magnetized to the bodies of passers-by, functioning as an "attract mode" display that piqued curiosity.

ENGAGE

Passers-by were drawn into the flight deck experience, and engaged with one of seven multi-touch kiosks to learn about the history of flight at SFO, attractions and art exhibits within the airport, and the city itself.

CONNECT

Travelers' time is limited, a mobile take-away component enabled them to make their time at SFO a part of their personal narrative, by sharing content selections directly to their mobile phone.
